How to Pick the One that’s Right for You

 Senior Retirement Communities – It’s difficult for most to move to a retirement community.  Here are some considerations that will help you make this significant decision.

There a three major types of  senior retirement communities:

·      Independent Living

·         Assisted Living

·         Full Nursing Care

 Some communities will offer a combination of the above.  You’ll have to decide what’s best for you (and your spouse).

Cost

There is a wide range in cost to senior living communities.  On the cheaper end you have mobile home communities and the higher end luxury gated retirement communities.  The mobile home communities start in the $70,000 range and upwards.  The more upscale communities may have entry fees up to $250,000.  Either way, retirement can be expensive, depending on the type and location of the community.

Location

The following lifestyle factors will determine the location you choose: 

Cost-of-Living – Taxes, food costs, and utilities must all be considered.  Those who rely on a fixed monthly income are especially sensitive to this area.  Some states, such as Vermont, Maine and New York have very high tax rates, compared to states such as Arizona, new Mexico and Florida.

Rural vs City – Do you prefer to live in the country, with peace and quiet, or the activities and shopping available in the nearby city.  It’s all a matter of taste.

Climate - Some retires prefer warmth and sunshine, while others prefer enjoying four seasons.

Closeness – Many retirees wish to be close to their family and friends.  Visiting newborn grandchildren is much easier if the family is in close proximity.

Activities

The variety and type of activities you enjoy will play a key role in choosing a community.  Does the community offer structured activities?  Are organized day trips available?  What other leisure activity programs are in place?

Staff

How well is the community administered?  Is the staff friendly?  Does the administration look out for it’s residents?  Are the grounds well-kept?  These and other questions must be asked.

Before making any decision it’s important to visit and take a tour of the community.  Speak to a number of the residents, maybe even attend some events.  The residents will often be willing to share the positive and negative aspects of the community.
